Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Life of College Basketball Player
A 22-year-old college basketball player has tragically drowned in a Utah reservoir.
Deng Ador, along with 21-year-old Sa Mafutaga, was swimming at Blackridge Reservoir when they encountered difficulties in the water late Saturday afternoon. Authorities reported that Mafutaga managed to make it to shore and alerted police about Ador’s situation.
With the help of onlookers, efforts were made to pull Ador from the water.
“It was frightening,” mentioned Hudsyn Sandoval, a neighbor who saw the events unfold. “We witnessed police rushing by with stretchers, and one individual appeared really pale and unresponsive.”
After an extensive search involving divers and underwater robots, Ador’s body was eventually located.
Rescue teams from Unified Fire, South Jordan Fire, and the Utah Highway Patrol Dive Team searched for several hours after Ador went under approximately 35 yards from the shore. The robotic device finally found him at around 10:40 PM, and divers retrieved his body shortly thereafter.
According to family members, Ador, also known as Den Mayal, had completed two seasons at the University of North Dakota and was set to transfer to the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Both institutions expressed their sorrow over his untimely passing.
“Our hearts are shattered by the news of Den’s passing,” stated Principal Paul Suther, North Dakota’s men’s basketball coach. “He was an incredible person with a heart as big as a gym. Our thoughts are with his family, parents, and his teammates at both UND and UNO. He was fiercely competitive both on and off the court.”
Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield added, “After competing with him for two years, we were excited to bring him on board, and he showed remarkable progress this summer. Den truly enhanced our team culture.”
In light of the incident, Blackridge Reservoir has been closed.
