Tragic Stabbing of Ukrainian Refugee in Charlotte
A 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who recently escaped her war-torn homeland for a safer existence in the U.S. was fatally stabbed last week at a light rail station in North Carolina. This disturbing incident involved a homeless man with a lengthy criminal record, as reported by family members and authorities.
Iryna Zarutska sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the East/West Boulevard Light Rail Station in Charlotte before 10 PM on Friday night. The situation was confirmed by local officials a day later.
According to a GoFundMe page established to support her family during this tragic time, Zarutska had come to the U.S. in search of safety and a fresh start. The loss, as conveyed in a statement, is described as “irreparable” for her family, with her life cut short far too soon.
Authorities have identified DeCarlos Brown Jr., 34, as the suspect in this case. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and subsequently arrested on charges of first-degree murder. Court records show Brown has a history of multiple arrests since 2011, including felony theft and robbery with dangerous weapons.
Brown, who has previously served five years in prison for robbery, is currently facing pending allegations related to the misuse of the 911 system. Earlier this year, after a police welfare check, he claimed to believe he had “artificial” materials in his body. An affidavit noted he requested further investigation into this claim.
Details regarding the circumstances that led to Zarutska’s fatal stabbing remain unclear, and authorities are continuing their investigation. There has been no official confirmation about whether the stabbing occurred on the train, at the platform, or in the vicinity.
