Tragic Death of Minor League Hockey Player Orca Wiesblatt
Orca Wiesblatt, a minor league hockey player, tragically passed away in a car accident over the weekend in Canada. He was only 25 years old, and confirmation of his death came from both his agency and former team on Monday.
O2K Sports Management released a statement expressing their grief. They described Wiesblatt as an incredible person both on and off the ice, noting his passion for hockey, kindness, and deep love for his family.
Orca, together with his brother, raised awareness in the deaf community, emphasizing the importance of learning American Sign Language. The sports management team shared that he would be deeply missed, and their thoughts are with the Wiesblatt family during this difficult time.
Last season, Wiesblatt played for the Athens Rock Lobsters in the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). The team confirmed his death occurred in British Columbia following a traffic accident early Sunday morning. Other details surrounding the incident have not yet been disclosed.
Team president Scott Hull commented that Wiesblatt was instrumental in establishing the franchise’s culture during its inaugural season. He highlighted Orca’s contagious energy and passion that made him a favorite among fans and teammates alike. Hull noted that Ogun was even more remarkable off the ice.
A native of Calgary, Wiesblatt played for several minor and junior leagues, including the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). He had recently signed with the Allen Americans of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) just before the new season began.
Head coach and general manager Steve Martinson expressed the collective pain felt by the team, emphasizing that Orca was eagerly looking ahead to the next chapter in his hockey journey. His skills on the ice were matched by his ability to change the momentum of games.
Wiesblatt was one of five siblings, raised by two deaf parents. Despite financial hardships, their mother single-handedly ensured her sons could excel in sports. Orca’s younger brother, Ozzy Wiesblatt, recently made his NHL debut with the Nashville Predators in January.
