Noelia Castillo Ramos: Euthanasia Planned After Legal Battle

Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old victim of gang rape in Barcelona, is scheduled for euthanasia on Thursday. This follows a prolonged legal struggle led by her father, who has sought to halt the process.

Known primarily by her first name, Noelia suffered extensive physical and emotional trauma after an attempt to take her own life by jumping from a fifth-floor window following her assault in October 2022.

The incident caused her a complete and irreversible spinal cord injury, resulting in paraplegia. She can no longer move from the waist down and suffers from severe neuropathic pain and incontinence. Noelia began her application for euthanasia in 2024, which has led to a complex two-year legal battle.

Described as coming from a highly dysfunctional family affected by addiction and mental health issues, Noelia spent considerable time in juvenile detention during her childhood and teenage years. “Young women have faced tremendous challenges after such traumatic events in 2022,” noted a source.

Recently, the European Court of Human Rights announced that it would not intervene to block Noelia’s euthanasia despite her father’s last-minute appeals through Spanish courts.

News of this decision was conveyed by Spanish broadcaster Antena3, which also aired Noelia’s final interview, recorded at her grandmother’s home. In the interview, she expressed her feelings about her impending euthanasia.

Noelia conveyed a poignant message, stating, “I’ve finally done it. I wish I could rest from this family and all the pain stemming from my experiences. I don’t want to serve as an example for anyone. This is just my life.”

She acknowledged that her family disagrees with her decision, but emphasized that her well-being should be prioritized over her father’s wishes. “I just want to go in peace and stop suffering,” she added.

Reflecting on her emotional state, Noelia shared, “I don’t feel like doing anything… I don’t go out, I don’t eat, I just hurt.” She described life before her euthanasia request as overwhelmingly bleak, noting a lack of goals and purpose.

Noelia revealed that she had tried to end her life multiple times and recounted her experiences in psychiatric hospitals, where she endured self-harm and even attempted to consume harmful substances.

“I’ve never stopped hurting myself,” Noelia stated, sharing her disillusionment with society. “I really don’t like where things are headed. I’d rather just vanish.”
