250 years of resilience: The science behind America's achievements

Celebrating 250 Years of American Progress

This summer is a notable time for the country, marking its 250th anniversary. It’s a moment to reflect on the patriotism, creativity, and advancements that have defined the nation. As we celebrate, it’s important to acknowledge the crucial role chemistry has played in shaping America. It’s in the materials that built our early industries and in the technologies that fuel our economy, ensuring we can compete globally. Chemistry, quite literally, powers our everyday lives.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) emphasizes that chemistry remains the backbone of innovation, competitiveness, and leadership in the U.S. “The chemistry in America has transformed dreams into achievements,” remarked Chris Jahn, ACC’s president and CEO. “Our industry relies on the hard work of countless individuals who enable chemistry to thrive, forming the core of America’s strength.” Chemistry involves more than just lab coats and complex formulas; it’s essential to modern living—think clean water, dependable infrastructure, lifesaving medical tools, affordable goods, and cutting-edge technology materials.

Looking Ahead to the Next 250 Years

As the U.S. considers the next 250 years, major investments will be necessary in foundational elements that turn innovative ideas into practical solutions. This includes supporting advanced manufacturing, quickly growing data centers, and expanding AI technologies. Chemistry is essential for transforming these ideas into realities. Jahn noted, “Our industry will continue to facilitate groundbreaking advancements like AI and advanced recycling, ensuring America stays competitive, strong, and thriving.”

Turning Potential into Reality

Reaching these ambitious goals needs a regulatory landscape that fosters progress while boosting domestic production. This calls for a reliable, transparent, science-informed strategy alongside enhancements to the nation’s chemical management laws. Currently, proposed bills in Congress could reinforce the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) by minimizing delays, increasing certainty, augmenting U.S. production, and fostering domestic manufacturing. Implementing these changes can lead to stronger supply chains, more job opportunities, and improved national security.

The current administration has focused on reinforcing domestic manufacturing and investing in research and development to keep the U.S. competitive globally. Congress has a chance to advance this path by passing amendments to TSCA.

“President Trump’s administration and the EPA are striving to ensure a healthier, more affordable America.”

Chris Jahn, ACC President and CEO

The Future Awaits

Americans desire affordability, reliability, and a strong sense of national confidence. According to the ACC, a significant majority (72%) agrees that increasing chemical production will stimulate job growth and investment in both capital and research and development. The long-term perspective for chemistry looks positive. As we step into the next 250 years, America’s chemical manufacturers will persist in driving the innovations that keep the country resilient and competitive on the global stage.

Our achievements have always been intertwined with chemistry. It builds and fortifies America. It’s important to contact your representatives and urge them to support critical TSCA legislation.
