26-year-old ex-teacher charged with having sexual relations with 16-year-old male student

A former teacher from Michigan is facing allegations of engaging in sexual conduct with a 16-year-old male student. Reports indicate that the accused, 26-year-old Jocelyn Sanroman from Pontiac, had these alleged interactions in 2023 while working at Oakside Prep Academy located in Waterford Township, around forty minutes northwest of Detroit.

It’s been stated that Sanroman confided in other teachers about her relationship with the student, prompting one of them to report the matter to authorities.

She was arrested recently on three counts of criminal wrongdoing, marking her third arrest on similar charges. If she is found guilty, she could potentially face up to fifteen years in prison.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Sanroman voluntarily turned herself in and was booked and subsequently released on the same day. Notably, if she fails to appear for a scheduled court conference on July 10, the $20,000 bond will be voided.

According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, any time a school staff member tries to form a relationship with a student, it is a crime, regardless of who initiates the connection. She further remarked that while the 16-year-old might consent, the power dynamics shift dramatically when a teacher is involved.

McDonald also pointed out that when she was the same age as the accused, she too was a teacher, which complicates matters. “As a parent, I feel strongly about schools being safe places for children,” she added.

“The allegations highlight a serious breach of trust that teachers have with students and their families,” McDonald stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance to protect minors from such exploitation.

A local news team attempted to reach Sanroman at her residence but reported no one was home.

A representative from Oakside Prep Academy stated that they took immediate action upon learning about the allegations and voiced the sentiment that such claims make the school community feel unsettled. They reinforced that the safety and happiness of their students is a top priority.

The news of this incident follows closely after another high-profile case in New York, where a 22-year-old school district employee was charged with sending inappropriate photographs to a 14-year-old boy.
