26-year-old Michigan teacher charged for reportedly confessing to a coworker about having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student

Officials report that a former teacher from a Michigan charter school, Jocelyn Sanroman, engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student and discussed it with colleagues. Sanroman, 26, has been charged with third-degree sexual conduct, as reported by Fox 2.

The incidents are said to have taken place in 2023 while she was teaching at Oakside Prep Academy, located in Waterford Township, about 30 miles from Detroit. While she hadn’t been arrested by Monday morning, her mugshot was already shared by an Oakland County representative.

According to prosecutors, Sanroman informed another teacher about her relationship with the student, which led to a police report. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald noted, “The defendant is accused of using her authority position to exploit the minor victim.” She emphasized that such actions breach the trust parents and communities place in educators.

McDonald added that while the teenager might have given consent, it’s essential to understand that a teacher-student relationship is fundamentally different. “School should be a place where your kids feel safe from various threats, including sexual assault,” she remarked, stressing the need for safety in educational environments.

If found guilty, Sanroman could face a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

In the aftermath of the allegations, school officials expressed concern and took swift action. They issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for students. “Their safety and well-being remains our number one priority,” the statement read.

Oakside Prep Academy is part of the National Heritage Academy system, which prides itself on a curriculum focused on moral development. The school website highlights its approach to teaching patience, respect, compassion, and courage as core values.
