2,800 Injured, 8 Killed, in Pager Attack on Hezbollah

A Lebanese minister reported Tuesday that eight people were killed and 2,800 injured in an attack believed to have targeted pagers used by Hezbollah for communications.

The Israel Times Reported:

Lebanon's health minister announced that a pager explosion in Lebanon killed eight people and injured around 2,800, 200 of them seriously.

Hezbollah said two of its members were among the dead, including the daughter of a Hezbollah member who was reportedly killed when a pager exploded at her family home.

Images and videos posted on social media showed the men with wounds to their stomachs and chests that appeared to be caused by pager explosions that occurred around the same time on Tuesday.

Reports have speculated that Hezbollah may have disposed of other, more advanced mobile devices after Israel killed Hezbollah deputy commander Fuad Shukr in July. It is unclear how the pagers were hacked, and it has not been confirmed that Israel did so. Speculation The malware may have caused the device's lithium battery to overheat and explode.

Pager explosions have also reportedly occurred in Syria, where Hezbollah and Iran are conducting military operations.
