3 dead after fleeing suspect crashes near Wisconsin’s capital

A car fleeing a police traffic stop in suburban Madison crashed overnight, killing all three people inside, authorities said.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Monona police attempted to stop a “suspicious vehicle” around 9 p.m. Monday, but the driver fled.

A car crashed in the nearby town of Cottage Grove after Dane County deputies installed a tire deflation device, and all three occupants died at the scene, the DCI said in a statement.

The agency's statement did not elaborate on the circumstances of the crash, including whether the driver lost control after hitting the device or swerved to avoid it.

A fleeing suspect crashed a car in Dane County, Wisconsin, on Monday night, killing all three people inside.

The DCI did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Tuesday about the specific circumstances of the accident or why Monona police had deemed the vehicle “suspicious.”

The Associated Press also left a message with the Dane County Coroner asking if the three crash victims have been identified.

Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney said in a statement that he requested the assistance of the DCI and the Wisconsin State Patrol in investigating the pursuit and fatal crash.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duty and the DCI is investigating with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol.
