3 family members electrocuted after power line falls on SUV; toddler miraculously survives

Two adults and a teenage boy were electrocuted and held by one of the victims Wednesday when a tree and power line fell on a truck outside an Oregon home during a strong winter storm. The infant miraculously survived.

Emergency crews responded around 11:45 a.m. to a report of a person on fire at the intersection of Northeast 122 and Northeast Siskiyou Street in the Russell neighborhood outside of Portland. According to KPTV.

Tree branches snapped and live wires were attached to the red Ford Expedition below, electrifying the SUV.

The occupants of the vehicle, unaware of the danger, ran onto the road and died from the impact.

“The vehicle was energized, so when the vehicle touched the ground, an electrical current flowed through it, ultimately killing all three people,” said Rick Graves with Portland Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters found three people dead about 35 feet from the vehicle.

The 2-year-old child was taken to the hospital for tests and is said to be in good condition.

The child's mother, a 21-year-old who was six months pregnant, was killed along with her teenage brother, identified as Taron Briggs, 15, a 10th grade student at Milwaukee High School.

A heartbroken father and his wife said they heard a “thud” and saw the car on fire.

“It just hurt. You watch your kids die and there's nothing you can do,” said Randy Briggs, the two brothers' father. he told KGW. “I have six children. I lost two in one day.”

Neighbor Majia Washington heard what she thought was a gunshot before seeing the bolt of light.

“In my mind I'm thinking, 'I have to have this baby.' That's all I was thinking. 'I have to have this baby,'” Washington told KGW.

Portland Fire Rescue emphasizes the importance of staying away from fallen wires as they may be live, and if you are involved in a situation where there are wires inside your vehicle, you should never leave your vehicle. He emphasized that this is not the case.

“If a live line actually causes a problem, we can contact the power company and shut down the line,” Graves said. As long as the rubber is connected to the ground, it is grounded and safe.”
