3 more suspects nabbed in Savannah, Georgia, shootout that wounded 11

Three new suspects have been arrested in connection with a shootout that left 11 people injured in a public square in the heart of Savannah’s downtown historic district, police announced Friday.

This brings the total number of people charged in the May 18 shooting to four. No one was killed, but police say 10 people were shot and another person was injured by a broken car window. All victims were treated at a hospital and subsequently released, police said.

Savannah Police Chief Renee Gunther said multiple gunmen opened fire after an argument between two women late at night in Ellis Square, an area lined with restaurants and bars in a popular tourist nightlife district.

Police said in a statement that three people — Samira Kenney, 29, Jordan Caleb Jones, 20, and Kazare Cooper, 19 — were jailed Thursday in connection with the Ellis Square shooting. The three have been charged with aggravated assault, with Kenney facing five counts and Jones and Cooper facing four counts each. The three also face charges of possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Cooper also faces charges of theft and drug possession and a gun charge in an unrelated pending felony case, according to Chatham County Superior Court records. Cooper was released on $5,000 bail in January 2023, records show.

Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Savannah, Georgia that left 11 people injured.

Chase Karns, Cooper’s attorney in the case, did not immediately respond to phone and email messages Friday.

No attorneys for Kenney or Jones were listed in online jail or court records, and The Associated Press was unable to find phone numbers corresponding to addresses for them listed in court documents.

The other suspect, 20-year-old William Anthony Mitchell, was arrested last week and charged with four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime.

Mitchell was already charged with felony possession of crack cocaine with intent to sell in an unrelated, pending case. A judge granted bail on April 18 and the suspect was released from jail, according to Chatham County state court records.

Mitchell’s attorney, Greg Crawford, declined to comment when reached by phone Friday.

The violence at Ellis Square was Georgia’s oldest city’s deadliest mass shooting since someone in a passing car opened fire on a crowd outside a Savannah apartment complex in June 2021. One person was killed and seven were injured.
