Police first arrived at the home near Dixon after a family member reported a relative was making threats of suicide and homicide, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office said in a news conference.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle said authorities were unable to make contact with the man inside the home, so officers entered and were quickly engaged in an exchange of gunfire.

Three officers were shot and taken to a local hospital, and the suspect was also shot during the incident, authorities said.

Officials said all involved were in “good condition” but did not provide any further information.

Emergency vehicles, police cars and two medical helicopters converged on the Lost Lake area during what the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office called a “major incident.”

The sheriff said he has requested Illinois State Police to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
