30 Candidates Killed During Mexico’s Current Electoral Season

The killings of two political candidates in Mexico over the weekend show that the current political cycle is one of the bloodiest in decades. Criminal organizations and their political allies appear to be doing everything in their power to eliminate opposition.

Last Friday, Noe Ramos Feletis, the mayor of Ciudad Mante, Tamaulipas, was walking the streets of the city’s south side trying to rally support for his re-election bid. A man approached him and stabbed him several times, leaving him on the ground in a pool of blood. Ramos was a candidate for MORENA’s opposition party, the National Action Party (PAN). The Morena Party is the political party of current Governor Americo Villarreal and Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador.

Over the weekend, authorities were able to arrest the man believed to have stabbed Ramos. A motive for the killing has not been revealed. Ramos made headlines in Mexico when he claimed that government officials refused to address the Gulf Cartel’s spread into the region and that the cartel began extorting local farmers with total impunity. .

Also on Friday, authorities in Oaxaca discovered the body of Alberto Antonio García, a mayoral candidate in the town of San Jose Independencia. Earlier this week, unknown gunmen kidnapped Garcia and his wife, current mayor Agar Cansino Gómez. According to information from the Oaxaca state attorney general’s office, the gunmen appear to have tortured the two victims, but did not kill the woman. Both victims were from the MORENA party.

According to the NGO Laboratorio Elections, from the start of the election period on June 4, 2023 to April 19, 2024, there have been 57 murders (30 candidates), 11 kidnappings, 29 attempted murders, and and 77 threats. Despite Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador’s claims that political violence has decreased or stopped, statistics show the current election cycle is one of the bloodiest in recent history. It shows that there is.
