$30 Entry Fee for Obama’s Library, Residents Need ID for Discount

Admission Fees for Obama’s Presidential Library

Former President Barack Obama has made quite a name for himself, and visiting his extensive presidential library in Chicago comes with a $30 entry fee, which seems a bit high—especially considering the city’s struggles under Democratic leadership.

If you’re an Illinois resident, there’s actually a way to get in for free on Tuesdays, with a $4 discount available on other days. Just remember, you’ll need to present an ID to prove your residency. So, it seems ID checks are acceptable when it comes to accessing benefits associated with Obama.

The admission price of $30 for adults stands out—it’s more than what other U.S. presidential libraries charge. Reports indicate that this fee is 59% above the average cost for presidential libraries ranging from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Interestingly, Chicago is expected to grow as a hub for Democrats, attracting those eager to connect with the party’s most well-regarded living former president. The library is anticipated to draw around 700,000 visitors annually and serve as an economic catalyst for the city, potentially revitalizing nearby low-income communities.

Given that we’re discussing Democratic initiatives, I can’t help but wonder if EBT will be accepted for library access.

On another note, it’s worth mentioning that the original estimate for President Obama’s library costs has ballooned from $300 million to an astonishing $850 million. This expansive facility occupies 9.5 acres of prime land in Chicago and has drawn descriptions likening it to a temple of sorts. It’s a curious image, maybe reminiscent of a sci-fi story where one group exists in blissful ignorance while another thrives in the shadows.

A spokesperson for the library stated that, apart from one section on the fourth floor, the campus remains free and open to the public.

Additionally, the library complex features an NBA-sized basketball court, a two-story playground, a recording studio, classroom space, and over 20 pieces of newly commissioned public art.

However, I suspect that after the initial buzz wears off, that $30 admission fee, combined with the challenge of driving and parking in Chicago, could significantly impact visitor numbers. It’s likely that maintaining such a grand infrastructure will incur hefty costs. And since we’re talking about the Democratic Party, it wouldn’t be surprising if there’s some long-term plan for the library to evolve into a “learning center” or something similar, potentially draining even more taxpayer money.
