California DMV Issues Replacement for REAL ID Licenses
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently revealed that around 325,000 residents—approximately 1.5% of the state’s REAL ID holders—will need to replace their REAL ID licenses due to a system error from 2006.
This problem traces back to a “legacy software configuration” rooted in 2006, which miscalculated the expiration dates for certain non-U.S. citizens legally residing in the country, like Green Card holders and visa recipients. Instead of properly aligning with the expiration of their legal status, the system incorrectly applied a standard renewal schedule. This discrepancy needs correction to comply with federal REAL ID requirements.
In essence, the glitch led to the erroneous application of standard renewal intervals for some non-citizen residents who have legal status, instead of synchronizing their IDs with their accepted durations of stay.
Officials clarified that this situation is purely administrative and does not affect U.S. citizens or those without legal status, as the latter cannot obtain REAL IDs.
The DMV stressed, “At no point were REAL IDs ever issued to undocumented individuals (those without legal presence),” adding that the issue has no connection to voting.
Residents affected will receive official notifications through mail. They can also expect an expedited, no-cost replacement to ensure compliance with federal flight security standards. Notably, the DMV will not request personal or payment information via phone, text, or email regarding this matter.
A recent review of the DMV’s data systems highlighted the need for updates on certain REAL ID records to adhere to federal regulations, as the agency disclosed on Wednesday.
DMV Director Steve Gordon noted in a release, “We proactively reviewed our records, identified a legacy system issue from 2006, and are notifying impacted customers with clear guidance on how to maintain a valid California-issued credential. For nearly 99% of REAL ID holders, no action is required. The DMV remains committed to serving all Californians and ensuring REAL ID credentials meet federal standards.”
Under federal law, lawful immigrants, including permanent residents and those on visas, can apply for REAL IDs. However, this coding issue from 2006 led to a standard renewal protocol instead of recognizing the expiration of an individual’s authorized residency.
The agency has since implemented measures to prevent similar problems in the future.
