Medicare Advantage Changes in Maine
In January, over 36,000 residents of Maine are anticipated to lose access to their Medicare Advantage plans. This shift comes as insurers withdraw from specific regions or discontinue certain coverage options across the state, as stated by the Maine Department of Insurance.
Members will be informed individually about their coverage changes. The department’s Friday announcement emphasized that those receiving termination notices should maintain their records.
People whose plans will soon expire need to select a new Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan during the annual open enrollment window, which is from October 15 to December 7, in order to prevent any interruptions in their coverage.
According to Joanne Rawlings, the director of the department’s consumer health division, this decision will impact at least 36,875 individuals in Maine. She mentioned, “We’re still waiting for one aircraft carrier (Humana).” Despite that uncertainty, she believes this is the accurate figure.
This number represents about one in six participants in Medicare Advantage plans statewide. Current statistics show that approximately 212,000 Mainers have taken part in the program for 2024, based on the most recent available data.
Most cancellations are linked to Martin’s Point plans, which will discontinue coverage affecting more than 28,000 members, according to the agency’s report. This includes the Generations Advantage Prime, Generations Advantage Value Plus, and Generations Advantage Select plans.
A representative from Martin’s Point has not yet responded to inquiries about the reasons behind these cancellations.
A county-by-county overview of available Medicare Advantage plans for 2026 can be found on the Bureau’s website.
Those impacted by changes can also consider enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, which assists in covering out-of-pocket costs from services included in original Medicare.
