The wellness industry is heading towards hyper-personalization, and, well, it’s landing right at our feet. A bunch of new footwear brands are leveraging artificial intelligence and 3D printing to craft shoes that conform to the unique shape of each customer’s foot, offering a level of comfort and support that standard sneakers just can’t compete with.
Jenny Chen, the COO and co-founder of FitX, a company specializing in custom running shoes, highlighted this shift, stating that the era of one-size-fits-all is basically over.
Interestingly, the shoe industry seems to be circling back to its origins. According to Ben Weiss, founder of Syntilay, shoes were essentially custom-made for most of human history until the 1800s when standard sizing became a thing.
3D printing had its heyday a while back, but it faced challenges like high costs, limited materials, and slow manufacturing speeds, which kept it from truly taking off in the footwear market. Now, however, advancements in AI are helping brands tackle these issues, optimizing designs and cutting down on waste, while also making customized shoes more accessible.
Syntilay’s AI-generated 3D printed shoes kick off at $119, while FitX offers custom kicks at a “Founding Runner” price of $199. Other brands like Zellerfeld are lowering the bar even further, with prices starting at $79 for 3D printed styles. Fitasy’s precision-fit shoes run around $260, which is surprisingly competitive against some top-tier offers from giants like Nike or Adidas.
The cool part? You don’t even have to go to a fancy store for fitting anymore. Just your smartphone camera and about ten minutes is all you need.
Yujun Wang, the CEO and co-founder of Fitasy, mentioned that custom shoes used to require a visit to specialized clinics, plaster casts, and long waits for expensive products. Now, anyone can just use their smartphone.
Wang believes that interest in customized footwear will grow beyond athletes and people needing orthopedic solutions. He thinks more consumers focused on health and wellness will get onboard.
By making shoes that fit perfectly, brands are addressing the minor daily stresses that ill-fitting footwear can inflict on our joints. For those in the wellness scene, this represents an opportunity to make small, yet significant, improvements in everyday life.
As someone who has spent ages choosing shoes based on size labels—sometimes hoping for the best—I can relate. I’ve bought pairs that looked fantastic, only to regret it later when my high arches and wide feet cried out in discomfort.
So I thought, could these AI-designed shoes actually fix longstanding issues? I decided to try out Fitasy’s custom 3D printed shoes.
Why One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Fitasy’s Stride 2.0 sneakers, which launched this year, look like a hybrid of a nurse’s shoe and a Yeezy foam runner. To order, I downloaded the app, scanned my feet with my iPhone, rotating them for a complete contour map. In just a few minutes, Fitasy’s AI whipped up a digital model of my feet.
Wang stressed that customizing each shoe for its intended foot is crucial because most people have slight asymmetries between their feet.
Dr. Rock Positano, a podiatrist, noted that while foot pain might not be life-threatening, it can certainly affect one’s lifestyle.
Ill-fitting shoes can lead to issues like tendonitis, blisters, and even pain in the knees and back. He also pointed out that while not everyone requires custom footwear, properly fitting shoes are essential for comfort and support.
That said, for those of us whose feet are out of the ordinary—in terms of width, high arches, or other differences—personalized shoes can be a game-changer.
Testing the Promise
About a month after my foot scan, my shoes arrived, complete with my initials—a little reminder that they were quite special.
I bravely wore the Stride 2.0 straight out of the box to a three-day biohacking event, during which I walked over 20,000 steps daily.
Much to my surprise, I didn’t get a single blister. My feet felt a lot less sore after all that walking, which doesn’t usually happen with new shoes.
It’s essential, of course, to stay alert to any pressure points or areas that might rub uncomfortably. But with Fitasy, I almost forgot they were experimental footwear—until someone asked what they were.
Upon receiving them, I noted their unique lattice design immediately. Unlike typical sneakers with layers of foam, this open structure allows for airflow, tackling one common issue found in traditional shoes—sweaty feet.
Over the past three months, I’ve put the shoes to the test in various scenarios, from running to catching the subway to hiking in water.
Each step felt cushioned, and they performed well. It was like wearing an adult version of Moon Shoes.
The shoes are also holding up impressively, with minimal signs of wear. Being fabric-free means they’re easy to clean, a refreshing change from the expensive white sneakers I used to buy that would get dirty quickly.
However, the design took some getting used to. While the Stride 2.0 has a futuristic appeal, it’s not exactly what I’d wear with a more sophisticated outfit.
Whether AI-designed shoes will catch on widely remains to be seen. But after a couple of months with mine, I’ve started to question the notion that everyone should cram into the same shape.
As people explore preventive health measures more actively, a growing market suggests that custom footwear could indeed be part of that trend.
As Dr. Positano puts it, “People often overlook the importance of their feet until they have a problem. Foot pain may not be life-threatening, but it definitely threatens your way of life.”
