Two terrorists opened fire on civilians along Jerusalem Boulevard in the city of Jaffa, south of Tel Aviv, on Tuesday night, seriously injuring at least seven people.
Israeli Army Radio reported that two gunmen opened fire with M-16 rifles at commuters on the platform of a light rail station. Residents were asked to evacuate to designated areas.
According to Army Radio, several people took refuge in a nearby Hasidic synagogue.
Jerusalem Boulevard is one of the main thoroughfares of Jaffa, the oldest part of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. The city has a large Arab population, and Jews also live alongside Arabs in the area.
In 2021, riots broke out during Hamas' last war against Israel. However, since October 7, 2023, Arabs and Jews have been united in Israel against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and other terrorist threats.
The apparent terrorist attack came as Israel anticipated a possible missile attack from Iran, with much of the country from the center to the south on alert.
Residents were asked to go into air raid shelters and safety rooms and not come out until instructed to do so by the Home Front Command. Typically, residents expect to spend only 10 minutes in their air raid shelters during a rocket attack.
update: Social media accounts reported that one of the gunmen was killed and the other was on the run.
update: The Times of Israel reported that four victims were killed and seven others were injured. social media showed Still image of one of the terrorists firing as if to execute a victim lying on the ground.
The two terrorists were later “neutralized,” the Times of Israel reported, citing police.
