4 NFL teams who were unfairly impacted by the schedule

NFL Schedule Insights

The NFL schedule for all teams was revealed on Thursday night, providing clarity on the upcoming season’s layout. While few teams managed to have a favorable bye week or an easy schedule beyond the season opener, some definitely got the short end of the stick.

Here are four teams facing a particularly challenging path this season.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are caught between two main objectives for 2026: establishing Mike LaFleur as a successful coach and ensuring they have sufficient time to scout for their future quarterback in the 2027 draft. Let’s be honest; Carson Beck likely isn’t the solution.

It sounds simple to suggest, “Just do your best this year and give LaFleur some leeway,” but creating a winning environment in the locker room is a tougher feat than it appears. The real struggle is that there aren’t any obvious opportunities on Arizona’s schedule to secure a few wins and demonstrate that this approach is effective.

Competing in the NFC West presents its own challenges—especially with a daunting start to the season. Just look at the opponents leading up to their Week 14 bye: Chargers, Seahawks, 49ers, Giants, Lions, Rams, Broncos, Cowboys, Seahawks, Rams, Chiefs, Commanders, Eagles. It’s a real uphill battle for a team looking for victory. Honestly, what did the Cardinals do to deserve five division games before their bye?

Los Angeles Chargers

A critical aspect of the Chargers’ schedule will be how well-rested their opponents are before facing them. Data indicates that Los Angeles has an astonishing 24 fewer days off than its rivals this season.

To make matters worse, the Chargers have an early bye week, occurring in Week 7 while they still have most of their schedule ahead. This is particularly rough given that the other teams in the AFC West have relatively favorable matchups leading into 2026, which adds to their challenges.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers face unique hurdles with two international games on their calendar, one against the Rams in Australia and another later in the season in Mexico City. This travel can be disruptive, particularly in an already tough NFC West, and they didn’t perform well after a similar match against the Vikings in Mexico City. Timing is crucial, especially with playoff aspirations in mind.

From Week 13 onward, they will contend with the Seahawks, Giants, Rams, Chargers, Chiefs, Eagles, and Cardinals. It’s a tough road, leaving minimal room for error as they chase playoff positioning. The journey includes a challenging trip to Australia followed by cross-country games in New York and Atlanta. All in all, this lineup is quite punishing.

Chicago Bears

Although Chicago is facing one of the toughest schedules this season, much of the difficulty lies in their game timings. Throughout the 17-game regular season, the Bears have five prime-time games, two at 4:25 p.m. ET, and will play on both holidays. This means they will be shifting routines constantly, making it hard to establish consistency.

Granted, Ben Johnson is a coach who can draw strong performances from his players. However, managing the pressures of international competition and shifting preparations makes success more challenging. Facing formidable opponents might hinder the Bears in matching last season’s performance.
