Child’s Death from Dryer Electrocution in Kansas

A four-year-old boy tragically lost his life after reportedly being electrocuted by a clothes dryer last Thursday, according to Kansas authorities.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) stated on Saturday that the incident took place in Savonburg while the child was playing inside a home. They mentioned that the child was suspected of being electrocuted by a 220-volt dryer.

Emergency responders transported the boy to a local hospital around 9:30 p.m., but he was later pronounced dead.

No foul play is suspected, and the ACSO is conducting an investigation into the accident. Following the incident, authorities shared their condolences with the family and all involved parties. They expressed their sorrow for the tragedy, particularly toward the Allen County dispatchers, first responders, and hospital staff who assisted.

The accident involved 220 volts of electrical current, a level that can lead to severe injuries or even death, including cardiac arrest.

While clothes dryers are often involved in numerous house fires—mainly due to lint build-up in exhaust ducts or overheating—electrocutions from such appliances are exceedingly rare. In an unusual event, a ten-year-old boy was found deceased in a dryer at a Houston-area apartment in 2018, with the medical examiner attributing the death to electrocution. Investigators in that case noted no injuries or evidence of foul play, ruling it an accident.
