California Dojo Struck by Vandalism, Loses Valuable Japanese Antique

A karate dojo in California is in shock after a vandal, riding a bicycle, broke a window and made off with a priceless piece of Japanese history.

The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. last Saturday at the Zen Martial Arts Center located in East Sacramento. Nearby surveillance captured footage of motorcycle thieves rummaging through the area before the vandal smashed a rock through the dojo’s window to gain entry.

The thief seemed less interested in cash or electronics, instead honed in on a 17th-century Wakizashi Japanese sword that had been a treasured heirloom in a local family for over 400 years.

“It actually belonged to a longtime student,” dojo owner Mike Oliver shared with the media. “It’s been in their family for ages, and they graciously let us display it. Japan doesn’t even allow the export of wakizashi anymore. It’s a significant part of cultural heritage, so it really holds special value.”

This small companion to the traditional sword wasn’t just a weapon; it was the family’s “holy grail,” a symbol of lineage. The heirloom originally belonged to their ancestor, Chien Yayanaga, and the family had planned to pass it down to their son on the day he earned his black belt. The sword is valued between $4,000 and $6,000.

The dojo, a community fixture since 2009, is now calling on local pawnshops, antique stores, and the residents of Sacramento to be vigilant for any sign of this ancient sword.

In an effort to recover the stolen piece, Oliver and the George family have teamed up with Crimestoppers of the Sacramento Valley, offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the sword’s recovery and the capture of the thief.
