A new survey found that about 44% of respondents say they are likely to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, despite President Biden himself claiming otherwise.
of YouGov PollThe survey results, released Friday, show that voters are broadly divided on their views of the president’s actions, even as calls continue to grow for the incumbent president to step aside and field another candidate to challenge Trump in November.
Just over 15% of respondents said it was “very likely” that Biden would withdraw, while 28% said it was “somewhat likely.” Meanwhile, 24% said it was “unlikely” that he would withdraw and 14% said it was “not at all likely.” About 18% said they were unsure, according to the survey.
Independents were more likely to say they weren’t sure what decision the president would make, but Republicans were most likely to say he would step down, with roughly equal numbers of people from both parties saying it was “somewhat likely,” “not very likely” or “not at all likely,” according to the poll.
Voters also tend to be divided on what would happen if a new candidate were elected to the Democratic top post.
a Another survey According to the YouGov poll, only 25% said a new candidate would be a better president if Biden were to leave office. About 37% said the new candidate would be about as good as Biden, 28% said they weren’t sure and 10% said Biden’s replacement would be worse.
Still, voters were more likely to say another candidate has a better chance of beating former President Trump, who formally accepted the GOP nomination Thursday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
a Third YouGov Survey The survey found that 33% said the new candidate was more likely to win, 26% said they thought the chances were about the same as Biden’s against former President Biden, just under 15% said Biden’s replacement was less likely to win, and 27% said they didn’t know.
The three surveys were conducted July 19 among 4,309 adults.
