Philip Rivers Returns to the NFL
Philip Rivers had a clear idea of what was coming when he was contacted by the struggling Indianapolis Colts. The 44-year-old quarterback already had a rapport with Colts’ coach Shane Steichen, who had been the offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers during Rivers’ last game in 2020.
Steichen has maintained the same playbook, allowing Rivers to step in after he came out of retirement. The Colts had seen their promising season deteriorate, creating a need for experienced leadership.
This past Sunday, Rivers, who is also a father of ten, took to the field and even managed to throw a touchdown against a strong Seattle Seahawks team. The Colts initially led the game, but in a tight finish, the Seahawks secured the win with a field goal in the last 22 seconds, ending the game with a score of 18-16.
After the game, during a press conference, Rivers was asked about his motivation to return after almost five years away from professional football. He reflected that while he does coach a high school team, that’s not the main reason behind his comeback.
“I think about my sons, my two sons,” he shared, noting that sometimes it feels daunting to step back into such a high-pressure environment. “But I think maybe it could be an inspiration or a lesson.” He encouraged young people not to shy away from challenges and instead face them head-on.
Since retiring, Rivers has been coaching at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, where his son plays quarterback. It was touching to see him become emotional when discussing his team, emphasizing the importance of setting an example for his players, who often seem impressed by his bravery to return to the game.
His faith was also evident as he expressed a desire for this moment to spark positivity among young athletes. “Whatever God’s will is, I’m happy,” he added, highlighting his contentment with whatever comes next.
Addressing concerns about his skills after such a long absence from the game, Rivers admitted to having doubts initially but was quick to express gratitude that those feelings faded. “I’m at peace with everything about it,” he noted.
The Colts are gearing up to face the San Francisco 49ers next Monday— a crucial matchup if they hope to secure a playoff spot.
