Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Flores Island

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s Flores island, resulting in at least 47 fatalities as reported by the National Disaster Management Agency, BNPB.

The quake occurred early on Saturday near the coast of East Nusa Tenggara province, causing landslides and widespread damage to buildings. This prompted officials to issue a tsunami warning, although it has since been lifted.

According to rescue official Fatur Rahman, there were also about 50 injuries in addition to the confirmed deaths. Rescue teams have been actively searching for those who may be trapped under rubble. However, the efforts have been hampered by landslides and blocked roads.

Even though the tsunami warning was lifted, authorities are advising the hundreds of evacuees from Nagekeo, close to the epicenter, to stay on higher ground due to the risk of aftershocks that could lead to further collapses.

One resident, 56-year-old Johannes Babo, recalled being at the market when the quake struck. “The shaking was strong,” he said. “Luckily, we were already outside the house. People were panicking and running everywhere. We are evacuating for now… and trying to reach the hills.”

Evacuations were evident as people fled via cars, motorcycles, and on foot. Local news showed patients being moved from hospitals as a precaution, where medical staff set up temporary treatment areas on the street with beds and equipment.

Approximately 2,000 individuals were evacuated from Nagekeo, and reports indicate damage to homes, warehouses, and government properties.

Police chief Rudy Darmoko stated that the earthquake caused power outages and disrupted communication between towns and communities. “We continue to collect reports of damage and casualties, but we are experiencing communication disruptions,” he noted.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic activity, which makes it particularly susceptible to earthquakes. Notably, Flores experienced a similar earthquake in 1992, which resulted in a tsunami that claimed around 2,500 lives.

Additionally, about 12 hours after the initial quake, another earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale struck North Sumatra. Preliminary reports have not indicated any casualties or damage from that event.

Quakes between 6.0 and 6.9 are capable of causing moderate damage in populated areas, while those measuring between 7.0 and 7.9 are classified as major and can lead to severe destruction.
