49ers are uncertain about Brock Purdy's return in Week 3 against the Cardinals

The 49ers are unlikely to see Brock Purdy back on the field anytime soon due to a toe injury.

Adam Schefter from ESPN reported on Sunday that the team is “not optimistic” about Purdy’s return for their week three matchup against the Cardinals, although he may be making some headway. There’s still a glimmer of hope, but not much. Perhaps we’ll have a clearer picture next week, as a source indicated progress has been noted.

“We’ll be able to see it next week,” the source mentioned. “He’s made a lot of progress this week, but we’ll be narrow next week,” which sounds a bit uncertain, doesn’t it?

Purdy sustained the injury during the season opener against the Seahawks last week, right in the middle of his new five-year, $265 million contract extension.

Coach Kyle Shanahan addressed reporters on Wednesday, stating that Purdy is also dealing with a shoulder issue, making his chances slim for the upcoming game against the Saints. This sets the stage for Mac Jones, a former first-round pick, to start on Sunday in New Orleans.

The toe injury has been described as somewhat unusual, almost resembling a “grass toe.” According to team sources, Purdy could be sidelined for “a few weeks,” which isn’t great news for fans.

Following Purdy’s injury, the 49ers are exploring options to enhance their quarterback situation. Shanahan expressed confidence in Jones, though.

“Mac is amazing,” the coach remarked. “Our team really believes in him.” It’s encouraging, I guess, but will that translate on the field?

Jones was the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Patriots, where he had a notable rookie season, throwing 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while earning a Pro Bowl selection. However, his subsequent seasons did not quite keep that momentum, as he found himself benched during his final year in New England.

Last season, he was working alongside Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, and later signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the 49ers in free agency.

The game against the Saints is scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM.
