49ers-Brandon Aiyuk contract drama still ‘stuck in the mud’

The saga of Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers is far from over.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said Wednesday that with just over a week until the start of the 2024 NFL season, the two sides remain at an impasse.

“I can't tell you how many times I thought the Aiyuk thing was going to get resolved one way or another, whether that be a trade or a contract extension.” Garafolo said on “Good Morning Football“And we’re still stuck here in the Brandon Aiyuk quagmire.

“… At this point, the understanding was that he would practice, so we'll have to see if he plays in the San Francisco 49ers game (Wednesday). But again, we're not any closer to a contract extension or a trade than we have been in recent weeks.”

Garafolo added that 49ers star offensive lineman Trent Williams could remain on strike into the regular season.

Aiyuk's situation has been one of the biggest stories in the NFL offseason, with the 26-year-old seeking a contract extension on par with other lucrative deals given to wide receivers in recent years.

In recent weeks, Aiyuk has been caught up in trade rumors to the Steelers, Browns and Patriots, among others.

More than a week ago, 49ers general manager John Lynch said the team felt a “sense of urgency” to resolve the ongoing Aiyuk dilemma.

“It's been a long, difficult, tough process, a tough journey,” Lynch told ESPN. “We started this early and for one reason or another we just couldn't get it across the finish line. It's been frustrating.”

Aiyuk, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is set to earn $14.2 million in 2024, the final year of his rookie contract.

He recorded a career-high 1,342 yards receiving and seven touchdowns in 2023.
