49ers bring on former Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Returns to the 49ers

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is making a comeback with the 49ers.

The former general manager of the Vikings is heading back to the Bay Area, taking on a role in executive personnel. John Lynch, who serves as the team’s general manager and director of football operations, shared this news during a chat with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“We’ve got Kwesi back on the team, and we’re genuinely excited about it,” Lynch expressed.

Adofo-Mensah was let go by the Vikings last month after four years in the general manager position. While his dismissal wasn’t particularly shocking, given ongoing speculation regarding his standing, the timing did catch many by surprise.

Upon being fired, Adofo-Mensah reached out to Lynch, an interesting move since Lynch had previously been part of the organization’s football research and development from 2013 to 2019. Lynch mentioned feeling honored that Adofo-Mensah contacted her promptly, and she used that moment to suggest the idea of giving back.

“It was just a casual remark, ‘Kwesi, we’ve always appreciated having you, so just know there’s a place for you with us,’” Lynch recalled.

This casual comment sparked further discussions.

“That naturally led into more detailed conversations,” Lynch noted. “We’re bringing him back in a personnel executive role, and we’re looking to solidify things after the draft.”

Adofo-Mensah had previously worked with the 49ers before joining the Browns, where he served as vice president of football operations for two seasons, eventually leading to his role with the Vikings.

In 2024, Adofo-Mensah selected Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy, a decision that would impact his tenure, as McCarthy struggled to perform and maintain health in 2025. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings to a 14-3 record that season, moved on to the Seahawks and helped them clinch a Super Bowl victory.

Now, Adofo-Mensah has the opportunity to rebuild his career in San Francisco.

“I think he’s changed quite a bit since we last worked together,” Lynch mentioned. “But I’ve always liked him. I’ve known Kwesi for a long time and found him valuable for our organization. He’s incredibly smart and has a unique perspective, which is something we appreciate. I believe that kind of vision only enhances our team.”
