Injury Woes Continue for the 49ers
The 49ers just can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries.
This time, quarterback Brock Purdy is out due to a toe injury suffered during a game against the Rams on Thursday night. Mac Jones will step up to make his third start this season, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Purdy’s struggles have been evident since week one, where he not only hurt his toe but also dealt with a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for two games. Now, this will mark his third absence this season.
And the injury report doesn’t stop there. Wide receivers Ricky Piersol and Jau Angennings will also be on the bench, due to knee and ankle/rib issues, respectively. Additionally, their star tight end, George Kittle, is out after battling a hamstring injury since week five, which has affected his performance since day one.
So, despite these setbacks, the 49ers managed to start the season strong, boasting a 3-1 record. But then came the upset loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.
Purdy played against the Jaguars last week, but honestly, he didn’t seem like his usual self. He threw two interceptions and only completed 57.9% of his passes. Not great. Piersol and Jennings had their share of struggles in their games too, which certainly didn’t help matters.
As for Jones, he actually stepped in very well before, going 2-0 with four touchdown passes and 563 yards under his belt in those starts. That’s pretty impressive.
Now, with the injuries piling up, the 49ers will look to backup receivers Demarcus Robinson and Kendrick Bourne, along with tight end Jake Tonges, to fill the gaps on Thursday.
They’re crossing their fingers for better health as they prepare to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 12th.
