The San Francisco 49ers confirmed that first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in downtown San Francisco on Saturday.
The team confirmed initial reports from local media, adding that Mr Pearsall's condition was “serious but stable”.
“He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is in critical but stable condition,” the team wrote on X. “We ask that you respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”
Video of the incident shows Pearsall covering the upper right area of his chest as he walks toward an ambulance.
NBC Bay Area reporter Gia Vang first reported news of the shooting early Saturday night.
“49ers player Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in Union Square,” Gia Van wrote on X. “According to Detective Peskin's office, a suspect is in custody and Ricky is in stable condition. His office is in contact with Central Command. More details to come.”
Both Pearsall and the suspect were shot, and Gia Van confirmed in a later post that San Francisco police had confirmed the suspect had been shot with his own gun.
The San Francisco Police Department's director of strategic communications called the shooting “tragic” and unacceptable.
