49ers Face Another Injury Setback
The San Francisco 49ers, already grappling with numerous injuries, faced yet another setback. With nearly 20 players sidelined, and Coach Kyle Shanahan recovering from a concussion, the team couldn’t get through even the first drive of the preseason unscathed.
Cornerback Jack Jones, one of the few players expected to make a significant impact, was unable to continue after leaving the season opener against the Titans due to a hand injury.
Jones, who has spent five years in the league, joined the 49ers as a free agent and had been impressing in training camp. As a member of the second unit, he had emerged as a strong asset. Unfortunately, this injury comes at a time when the secondary was one of the healthiest groups on the roster, with only safety Malik Mustafa dealing with a hamstring issue among 17 injured players. This may help if Jones needs to miss time.
Jones was replaced by rookie Efesians Prysok, while first-string cornerbacks Deomodore Lenoir and Renaldo Green were also absent, alongside several key starters from San Francisco.
The details regarding Jones’ injury—its specifics and seriousness—were not disclosed. Notably, he exited the game after helping Titans running back Tejay Spears gain 25 yards on the eighth play.
Meanwhile, Tennessee’s starting lineup went on to complete a 95-yard scoring drive against the 49ers’ backups. In response, San Francisco’s reserve offense managed a touchdown drive, with third-string quarterback Curtis Rourke completing 12 of 14 passes for 100 yards. However, Rourke too was sidelined later, this time due to a rib injury, leaving Adrian Martinez as the sole quarterback in uniform.
Adding to the situation, Rourke, a seventh-round pick in 2025, missed all of the previous season while recovering from ACL surgery.
