The reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers have been stockpiling compensatory draft picks over the past few years.

The Niners, along with the Los Angeles Rams, acquired five additional draft picks earlier this month, tied for the most in the NFL this year. However, the 49ers learned that some of their additional draft picks were downgraded or canceled.

On Monday, the league announced teams would be stripped of one of their 2025 draft picks. This year’s fourth-round pick will move from No. 131 to No. 135. The league said the suspension was due to an administrative payroll error.

“This action stems from a league review in which an administrative error in payroll was discovered at the end of the 2022 league year that led to the misreporting of clubs’ cumulative player compensation. “Regardless of the error, there was no intent to circumvent the cap,” the NFL statement said.

The 49ers took responsibility for the mistake and accepted the league’s punishment.

“We accept responsibility and accept discipline imposed by the NFL due to administrative payroll errors. We will never mislead, deceive, or gain competitive advantage from the league in connection with payroll errors I have never received any.”
