49ers GM John Lynch responds to Kyle Shanahan trade rumors

49ers general manager John Lynch is scoffing at the idea of head coach Kyle Shanahan being in the hot seat.

San Francisco is 5-7 and appears to be at a championship crossroads due to aging players and injuries.

Earlier this week, ProFootballTalk founder Mike Florio floated the idea of the 49ers trading Shanahan to the Bears. This would allow the 49ers to get a clean split and receive compensation, while giving the Bears an offensive guru to pair with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Sadly, Lynch appeared on KNBR on Friday and poured cold water on the idea that Shanahan might not return to the team next year.

“I'm sitting around doing nothing and trying to concentrate, but I found the whole discussion about Kyle and some of the things rather funny,” he said. Featured in the Chicago Sun-Times.

“We've won four of the last five division championships. We've been to the Super Bowl twice. The standard here is to win championships, but we fell short of that. I don't. I get it. But we have a good head coach. And I think the fact that people are talking about things like that is ridiculous.”

Florio made the comments about Shanahan during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” earlier this week.

“I feel like Shanahan and the 49ers are close to a mutual benefit from a fresh start,” Florio said before singling out the Bears as a good spot for the coach.

“If we get Shanahan and we get to match Caleb Williams, are you kidding me?”

Florio is similar to the time when Jim Harbaugh's time in San Francisco was coming to an end, with trade talks that ultimately fell apart to send the coach to Cleveland.

The Bears (4-8) are looking for a new head coach after firing Matt Eberflus midway through his third season with the team.

The teams will meet in Santa Clara on Sunday, and the 49ers need a win to stay in contention for the NFC West.
