The San Francisco 49ers faced their first defeat of the season on Sunday, losing to the Atlanta Falcons with a score of 29-20.
In this game, the team had only four active receivers, largely due to injuries that have impacted the position heavily.
Key players such as Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Ricky Pearsall, and rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling were sidelined and might remain out for the foreseeable future.
Even with the setback, tight end George Kittle remained upbeat, praising head coach Kyle Shanahan for devising a strategy that allowed quarterback Brock Purdy to rack up 288 passing yards and throw one touchdown, while completing 27 out of 40 attempts—albeit with two interceptions.
“I’m always going to back the guys we have on the field,” Kittle expressed. “Going into that game with just four active receivers? I don’t think we’ve ever done that under Kyle Shanahan. Usually it’s five. I believed we could win, and I thought the limited receivers wouldn’t hold us back.”
Kittle recognized that the game plan shifted significantly in the absence of star players like Evans, who is a Hall of Famer, as well as Pearsall, Stribling, and Samuel.
“It changes the dynamics. There’s no Deebo on the sideline. No wide receiver filling in for running back snaps,” he noted. “Mike Evans is one of the most talented receivers I’ve played alongside.”
The two-time All-Pro emphasized that Shanahan and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak are effective in creating game plans that allow the rest of the team to thrive, singling out Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins as important assets.
Watkins stood out in the 49ers’ receiving efforts, recording six targets and three catches for 56 yards.
In the second half, there was a moment when Purdy connected with Watkins for what looked like a 23-yard touchdown. However, Watkins’ foot just grazed the sideline, and he was ruled out of bounds.
During the live broadcast, Fox commentator Greg Olsen mentioned that Kittle had highlighted Watkins as a player to keep an eye on earlier in the week.
“We can still win with what we have; it just might look different,” Kittle concluded.
