Jed York’s Ongoing Absence at 49ers Events

SANTA CLARA — The San Francisco 49ers’ home opener was noticeably missing one key figure, and it wasn’t due to injuries on the roster.

Principal owner Jed York is reportedly expected to be absent as the NFL continues its investigation into his recent arrest related to prostitution near his home in Ohio.

This information came from ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, who shared the news early Sunday morning, just a couple of hours before the 49ers were set to play against the Miami Dolphins at Levi’s Stadium, a venue York was instrumental in bringing to life.

York had also missed the season opener against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia. However, he made the nearly 8,000-mile journey to attend, but didn’t show up for the major events since then.

Earlier this month, he skipped the NFL owners’ meetings as well, delegating the attendance to CEO Al Guido.

According to a source, York is avoiding the 49ers to minimize distraction while the league completes its inquiry under its personal conduct policy. There are hints from another source that a decision regarding his potential punishment might come soon.

On August 23, York was arrested in a trailer park in East Palestine, Ohio, on suspicion of prostitution. Authorities alleged that he responded to an online solicitation and agreed to pay $160 for sex. He pled no contest to lesser charges, served two nights in jail, and paid a total of $1,150 in fines.

Following the arrest, the 49ers released an unsigned statement indicating they wouldn’t comment further as it was a legal matter that had been resolved. Since then, York has not addressed the issue publicly or made any appearances.

His absence continues a pattern that predates the incident. Typically, an owner like him would be expected to attend major games, especially those at a venue he helped finance. It felt strange that he also missed training camp prior to the arrest, particularly given his recent personal upheaval, including filing for divorce from his wife in May and moving into a $500,000 home in Youngstown, close to East Palestine.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged the situation during a pregame show on Netflix before the season started in Australia, noting that it was being looked into. “Once we complete it,” he stated, “we’ll make an announcement.”

Recent reports suggest that the findings could be revealed soon. Until then, it seems that the 49ers’ troubled owner will continue to remain out of the spotlight.
