Brandon Aiyuk’s Future with the 49ers Uncertain

John Lynch, the president of football operations and general manager for the San Francisco 49ers, has made it clear that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s tenure with the team may be coming to an end. In a statement during the team’s end-of-season press conference, Lynch remarked, “I think it’s safe to say he played his last game with the Niners.”

Lynch also acknowledged that there have been issues with Aiyuk’s situation, stating, “It’s unfortunate. Things have gone awry. I’m going to think long and hard about what I could have done differently, but sometimes things don’t work out. I think that was the case here.”

While there’s a possibility Aiyuk could be included in a trade package, Lynch indicated that the 49ers would be more willing to trade the 27-year-old receiver. Whatever the outcome, it looks like this difficult player-team relationship may soon be over.

Aiyuk’s contract negotiations stretched into training camp in 2024, only resolving when they reached a four-year contract extension in August, right before the season began. However, not long after that, he had what seemed to be a contentious exchange with head coach Kyle Shanahan regarding the shorts he wore to practice. Players were instructed to don black shorts, but Aiyuk reportedly showed up in red.

His performance dipped compared to previous seasons, and in October 2024, he suffered a severe knee injury, tearing multiple ligaments. He managed to accumulate only 374 receiving yards over seven games and missed several rehab sessions that summer.

By July 2025, the 49ers opted to void the roughly $27 million guaranteed in Aiyuk’s contract for the following year. In December, Shanahan noted that it had been a considerable time since he’d had any contact with Aiyuk. “For me it was very simple. I haven’t seen him in a month,” he told reporters.

Shanahan elaborated further on his unsuccessful attempts to reach Aiyuk. “I tried a few more times after that and still couldn’t. And at the end of the day, there’s not a lot of explanation because it’s really hard for us to understand,” he said. This situation has certainly been perplexing for everyone involved and, as Shanahan pointed out, something he has never encountered in his 22 years of coaching. It’s complicated and regrettable.

As of last month, Aiyuk was placed on the reserve/left team list and did not participate in any games throughout the 2025 season. Given his potential exit and Jauan Jennings’ upcoming free agency, the 49ers will likely be looking to enhance their wide receiver position during the offseason. Ricky Pearsall’s contract extends through 2026, though he had a limited presence last season due to injuries.
