Trent Williams is approaching the conclusion of his remarkable 16-year playing career, and it seems he’s forgotten part of it.
As the 49ers prepare to face the Washington Commanders on Monday night, Williams confessed he didn’t even recall his time with them.
“Sometimes I forget that I even played there. I only played nine seasons there,” he told reporter Harrison Rich from the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s been almost as much time here as I have there.”
Williams began his NFL journey with the Commanders after being picked fourth overall in the 2010 draft. From 2012 to 2018, he made it to the Pro Bowl seven consecutive times and helped the team reach the playoffs in 2012 and 2015.
However, his time with Washington came with challenges. In 2019, Williams was placed on the non-football injury list, which kept him sidelined for the entire season. The following year, he was allowed to seek a trade, which led to his transfer to the 49ers for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft and a third-round pick in 2021.
It’s interesting that while Williams seems to have moved on from his days in Washington, the team still recognizes his contributions. In 2022, they honored him by including him in their “90 greatest players and coaches” list for their 90th anniversary.
Since joining San Francisco, Williams has revitalized his career, making the All-Pro team three years in a row from 2021 to 2023. He has been a reliable left tackle, participating in 75 games for the 49ers, including 16 starts last season.
At 38 years old, Williams continues to play impressively this season, contributing to a solid performance where quarterback Brock Purdy has been sacked only three times—those came last week. The 49ers are going into their Week 6 match against the Commanders with an undefeated 5-0 record after a nail-biting 32-29 win over the Seahawks last week.
