49ers Make Quick Move at Kicker Position
The San Francisco 49ers are making swift changes.
Following the decision to let go of Jake Moody on Tuesday, Eddie Pineiro is stepping in as the new kicker, as reported by various sources.
Moody had a rough outing against the Seahawks, missing a 27-yard field goal and having a 36-yard attempt blocked. This caused quite a stir, with Fox sideline reporter Pam Oliver noting some intense reactions from players, including thrown helmets.
Pineiro, who spent the last three seasons with the Panthers, has a solid track record, successfully converting 92% of his field goal attempts.
“We’re keeping things steady and evaluating our options now, whether that’s bringing in everyone for training or looking at practice squad players,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday regarding the kicker situation. “HR is reviewing all possibilities and will help us with that.”
Before joining the 49ers, Pineiro reportedly had stints with the Jets and Bears. He made an impression during his workout with the team on Tuesday.
In a hectic update day for the franchise, tight end George Kittle injured his hamstring during the game against Seattle. San Francisco’s offense hopes to have him back by the October 12 matchup in Tampa, with four games in the next 23 days. Kittle managed four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown before getting hurt.
Shanahan shared some good news regarding wide receiver Jauan Jennings, as a scan of his injured left shoulder came back clear after he went down in the fourth quarter last Sunday.
“The MRI looked good; we’re just waiting for the CT results,” Shanahan informed reporters on Tuesday.
Another concern is QB Brock Purdy, who is coping with shoulder and toe injuries from the season opener. Shanahan offered some thoughts on this, saying it’s tough to gauge: “You might think toes are worse than shoulders… we just have to monitor how it heals throughout the week.”
If Purdy is unable to play, Mac Jones would step up into the starting role. Shanahan expressed confidence in Jones: “If he’s called to go this week, he’ll motivate everyone, and I trust he’ll perform at a high level.”
