The 49ers continued to make changes to their coaching staff on Tuesday, firing Nick Sorensen from his defensive coordinator position, according to multiple reports.
San Francisco wants to keep Sorensen on head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff next season, but in a different role.
Nevertheless, other job opportunities exist, so it is not a given that it will happen.
Sorensen, 46, has been a member of the 49ers' staff since 2022, but last season was his first as a DC.
The unit took a step back in several areas, finishing in 29th place with a total score of 436 points.
“I'm always learning,” Sorensen said last week when evaluating the work he's done in 2024. According to ESPN. “I'm probably harder on myself than anyone else. [be]you guys or anyone can say. It all starts with whether or not you can win the game. Of course, I want our defense to be top notch and to be the best it can be and continue to grow and get better. So in terms of evaluating me, I learned a lot. ”
The Niners will have a third defensive coordinator in three seasons, the first since Steve Wilkes was fired after the Super Bowl last February.

The list of candidates to replace Sorensen as Bay Area DC could include two former Jets coaches.
Robert Saleh's name has been floated as a candidate for the position. Per ESPNHowever, he is interviewing for the Jaguars' head coaching position.
Jeff Ulbrich has also been floated as a possible candidate.
