The NFL announced Monday that the 49ers will be forfeited a 2025 fifth-round draft pick as punishment for an administrative payroll error that occurred at the end of the 2022 season.
San Francisco will also have its fourth-round pick moved up from 131st overall to 135th overall as part of the league’s disciplinary action.
The NFL has begun a review after becoming aware of an error that led to “misreporting of a team’s cumulative player compensation.”
It was determined that the 49ers “would have been under the salary cap at all times regardless of the mistake and had no intention of circumventing the cap.”
The Niners took full responsibility for the matter and said they had no problem with the NFL’s punishment handed down on Monday.
“We take responsibility and accept any disciplinary action imposed by the NFL as a result of the payroll error,” the 49ers said in a statement. “At no time did we mislead, deceive, or gain any competitive advantage from the league in connection with any payroll errors.”
The NFL has not said how big of a mistake the 49ers made with the false alarm.

Monday wasn’t the first time the Niners have been investigated by the NFL for alleged salary cap violations, nor was it the most severe punishment the Niners have ever faced for salary cap violations.
The 49ers were forfeited $300,000 and had to be stripped of their 2001 fifth-round draft pick and 2002 third-round draft pick after the NFL began investigating the club in July 1999. There wasn’t.
San Francisco is fresh off a Super Bowl appearance earlier this year where they lost to the Chiefs.
