“We have suspended Devondre Campbell Sr. for three games for conduct detrimental to our team. We will have no further comment on this matter,” he said.

Campbell lost his starting job when Dre Greenlaw returned from a torn Achilles tendon in the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted Campbell to play in the game because Greenlaw was hurting with a sore Achilles tendon, but Campbell refused. Shanahan said he was never given an explanation as to why the linebacker refused to play.

Shanahan said Friday that he does not expect Campbell to join the team beyond Week 16.

“We're looking at the semantics of exactly how to deal with it,” he said. Via ESPN. “But what you heard from me last night, what you heard from our players, what he did during the game, it's not something you can do to your team or your teammates, but it still doesn't do what we do. It's not about being part of a team.

“We're currently working through the exact semantics of that, but we'll address the situation appropriately.”

With Greenlaw on the mend, Campbell signed a one-year contract with the 49ers in the offseason.

The one-time All-Pro previously spent three years with the Green Bay Packers, one year with the Arizona Cardinals and four years with the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2023, Campbell recorded 75 tackles and one pass breakup.
