49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy and Receiver Ricky Pearsall Ruled Out for Sunday’s Game
Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will not participate in Sunday’s match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Purdy, dealing with a toe injury, alongside Pearsall, who has a knee injury, will be absent from the lineup.
It looks like backup quarterback Mac Jones, who was listed as questionable, is set to start for the 49ers. He sustained an oblique injury during the last play of their recent overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Although he was limited in practice this week, head coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that he should be ready to take the field.
Purdy, at 25, initially injured his toe in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. After missing two games, he made his return in Week 4 against the Jaguars, but unfortunately, the injury flared up again, forcing him to miss last week’s game versus the Rams. It’s notable that Purdy, who signed a five-year extension worth $265 million in the offseason, is now sitting out the sixth game in the team’s last 13 due to injury.
The 49ers are clearly feeling the absence of Purdy, yet they have remained resilient with Jones at the helm, boasting a perfect 3-0 record in his starts. Jones has completed 66.7% of his passes, throwing for 905 yards, six touchdowns, and just one interception over those three games.
Interestingly, Jones shares a unique statistic with Matthew Stafford, being one of the only two franchise quarterbacks who have won their first three games while passing for over 900 yards and scoring at least six touchdowns.
However, Jones will face another challenge this week as his top target, Pearsall, is out, and he might also be without Jauan Jennings, who is questionable due to ankle and rib injuries.
The 49ers, holding a 4-1 record, will face off against the Buccaneers, also at 4-1, this Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
