MONTPELIER, VT
Approximately 50,000 residents of Vermont are now on the hunt for new health insurance after two major Medicare Advantage providers recently announced their exit from the market for small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.
Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Health are both withdrawing from Vermont’s individual Medicare Advantage plans, leaving many seniors in search of alternatives. This shift aligns with the upcoming general enrollment period for Medicare, exacerbating demands on state resources.
The Vermont Regional Agency Association on Aging is stepping in to assist those affected by offering one-on-one counseling to help them register for Medigap or other insurance options. Sam Carlton, the Director of the Vermont Health Insurance Program, explained that while Medigap plans are optional, those who forego them might end up paying 20% of their prescription drug costs. In anticipation of increased demand, his organization is ramping up staff.
“If you’re seeking help from your local SHIP office, be prepared for some wait times. Unfortunately, some individuals might find it challenging to get the support they need. That’s a statewide issue,” Carlton mentioned.
He emphasized that these changes are primarily impacting the marketplace tailored for individuals and small businesses in Vermont, stating that many large employers are likely to continue providing Medicare Advantage options.
Carlton also pointed out that Vermonters can compare Medicare and Medigap plans online at Medicare.gov or reach out to 1-800-MEDICARE. He reassured that these federal services remain unaffected by any current government shutdowns.
For those enrolled in the regular Medicare Part B plan, the deadline is December 7th. Carlton advised that individuals in the Medicaid perks program who receive an official notice from their insurance provider can register during a special period until February 8th.
Some viewers have expressed difficulties finding alternative plans in their areas. Officials maintain that there is still one option available; Humana offers plans, but availability may vary based on location and coverage.
