500k Arizonans could lose health insurance with looming federal funding cuts – Arizona's Family

Phoenix (Az Family) – There is growing concern about federal government spending cuts and state leaders with the potential impact on Medicaid's future.

Over 2 million people in Arizona are registered with Medicaid. AHCCCS.

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives was ordered to pass a budget resolution, including a House committee, to cut costs. The Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid, has been tasked with cutting by at least $880 billion over a decade.

“Medicaid is very problematic because there are a lot of fraud, waste, abuse. Everyone knows it. We all know it intuitively,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Arizona Public Health Association The executive director humbly says that if federal funds fall below a certain level, those registered under Arizona's low income expansion could lose compensation.

“We can't win $800 billion in 10 years without chasing Medicaid,” Humble said. “We're looking at about 550,000 people in Arizona losing Medicaid insurance.”

He says the areas where the biggest impacts are in rural Arizona and small communities.

If that happens, it could cost Arizona taxpayers almost $1 billion to maintain compensation for everyone. Humble says it's possible to find money to pay for it, but Gov. Hobbs said there's no way the state could fund it.

“These are our taxes we send to Washington, and they owe us,” Gov. Katie Hobbs said.
