During a recent traffic stop in Nebraska, over 500 pounds of suspected cocaine were found after a police K9, named Gable, alerted officers to a strong odor emanating from a vehicle. This was reported by the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) on Wednesday.
The troopers recovered approximately 525 pounds of suspected cocaine, along with 9.3 grams of suspected heroin, leading to the arrest of the individuals involved. NSP emphasized Gable’s crucial role in this discovery.
“Excellent work by Officer and K9 Gable who detected 525 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on I-80,” NSP highlighted in their announcement.
They joked, “The nose knows,” underscoring Gable’s skills in the operation. The K9 Division of the Nebraska State Patrol also commended the successful stop, noting that Gable significantly aided in the seizure.
A Nebraska state trooper had pulled over a semi-truck in the morning after observing it following another vehicle too closely. It was during this stop that K9 Gable made the crucial alert, prompting a thorough search of the truck.
Upon investigation, the officers uncovered hundreds of pounds of the suspected drugs. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Garappan Gil from Yuba City, California, was arrested and faces charges related to possession of a controlled substance and intent to distribute.
This incident follows a trend of recent large-scale drug busts nationwide, often involving the assistance of K9 units. For instance, just last month, a Florida Highway Patrol K9 was instrumental in finding over 2,000 pounds of marijuana hidden in an RV during another traffic stop.
