House Democrats Oppose Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk
On Friday, about sixty House Democrats voted against a resolution intended to honor Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. The measure passed with a vote of 310 to 58, introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson and backed by 165 GOP representatives. Democrats, including Jasmine Crockett from Texas and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, expressed their concerns by highlighting disagreements with Kirk’s political views.
Interestingly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries supported the resolution, while around 35 Democrats voted in favor as well.
The resolution includes a statement emphasizing how politically motivated violence contradicts the values of a free republic. It’s important, according to the resolution, to engage in discussions respectfully, even when opinions differ.
Democratic leaders seemed to support the resolution during a private council meeting but did not provide guidance for how members should vote, as reported by Axios.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) criticized Democrats for their opposition to recognizing Kirk’s legacy and condemned political violence. NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella stated that modern Democrats appear too extreme and disconnected from values that discourage politically motivated acts.
Earlier in the week, the Senate approved a similar resolution without objection. They also passed a measure designating a “national day of memory” for activists who lost their lives, scheduled for October 14, which coincides with Kirk’s birthday.
