Graphic Designer Found Dead in Brooklyn Apartment
A graphic designer who taught at two colleges in New York City was discovered dead in her apartment on Tuesday. Claudia Brandenburg, 58, was found with injuries to her neck in her Prospect Park West residence, which is located near Greenwood Cemetery.
Brandenburg was unresponsive when her husband found her on the bed and called 911 around 7:45 a.m., according to law enforcement and other sources. She had been an assistant professor at Parsons School for Design since 2002 and had also worked as an adjunct professor at NYU Steinhardt since 2015.
Officials reported that she was pronounced dead by first responders. Investigators noted signs of possible foul play, with reports of marks and blood around her neck.
The official cause of death will be investigated by the city’s medical examiner. Her colleagues expressed their shock and sorrow over the loss. Erin Johnson, the undergraduate director of Studio Art at Steinhardt, stated, “She was loved by her students and colleagues.” Johnson added that Brandenburg was known for her warmth and enthusiasm, making a lasting impact on those she taught.
Nearby residents were taken aback by the news. One neighbor remarked, “I really don’t know what happened. She was a force of nature and even the president of our cooperative.” Another resident recounted how officers had been knocking on doors, asking if anyone had heard anything unusual.
Many in the community hope for an explanation that indicates natural causes. Brandenburg was not only a professor but also the founder of a graphic design studio called Language Arts. She had an impressive background, having graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and worked for organizations like Bureau NY and the New York Times Magazine.
