6 confirmed dead after vehicle slides off ferry, plunges into Nile River

At least six Egyptian women were killed when a car carrying about 24 people slipped off a ferry and into the Nile River outside Cairo, authorities said Tuesday.

Nine other passengers were also injured in the accident, which occurred in the town of Monshat el-Kanater in Giza governorate, the Ministry of Health said in a statement. Giza is one of the three governorates that make up the Cairo metropolitan area.

The ministry said six of the injured were treated at the scene and three others were taken to hospital. No details were given regarding their injuries.

Giza Governor Ahmed Rashid said the minibus had been recovered from the Nile River and rescue efforts were continuing as of midday Tuesday.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

According to state-run daily Akbar, the car had about 20 passengers, mostly women, on their way to work when the accident occurred.

Egypt has seen frequent ferry, rail and road accidents, mainly due to poor maintenance and a lack of regulation. In February, a ferry carrying day laborers sank on the Nile at Giza, killing at least 10 of the 15 people on board.
