Peshawar:
Six police officers were killed and 22 others injured when a bomb blast targeted police officers guarding polio vaccination workers in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtankhwa province on Monday.
The incident took place in Mahmund tehsil of Bajaur province, which borders Afghanistan.
The police personnel had just boarded a van to take part in guard duty for a polio vaccination team when the explosion occurred.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where a state of emergency was declared.
The explosion killed six police officers and injured 22 others.
A police spokesperson said all the casualties were police personnel.
KPK interim Prime Minister Arshad Hussein condemned the attack and said the fight against terrorism would continue until the last terrorist was eliminated.
In Pakistan, polio teams are often targeted by armed groups because of their opposition to vaccines.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but Islamic extremists, including the Pakistani Taliban, have killed numerous polio vaccination workers and security police officers in the past.
