6 ideal pairings of players and teams from the NBA Draft after the first round

The conversation around the NBA draft often revolves around the debate of selecting the best available talent versus finding the right fit for your team. Personally, I believe drafts should focus mainly on securing long-term talent, while free agency and trades can help fill specific gaps in a roster.

In my instant evaluations of the 2025 NBA Draft class, most were based on how prospects ranked on my final pre-draft big board. However, there were a few selections that just felt right for both the player and the team, even if they were too exceptional to overlook.

It’s widely acknowledged that Cooper Flagg is a perfect match for the Dallas Mavericks, just as Dylan Harper is for the San Antonio Spurs. There are six other ideal player-team pairings from draft night that complement each other remarkably well. These represent some of the finest fits for the 2025 NBA Draft.

Kon Knueppel to Charlotte Hornets

The Hornets struggled from beyond the arc last year, ranking 28th in three-point percentage by making just 33.9% of their attempts. This shooting inadequacy limited Charlotte’s offensive threats. Enter Knueppel—one of the best shooters in this draft class. The Duke freshman shot 40% from three last year, making him a valuable connector between Lamelo Ball and Brandon Miller. While this roster still has a lot of work ahead, Knueppel possesses the NBA-ready skills that are desperately needed.

Kaman Maruah to the Phoenix Suns

Maruah was a clear choice as the “best player available” for the 10th place Suns, also helping to address a significant need at center. Phoenix’s performances in this position have been disappointing since trading Jusuf Nurkic and DeAndre Ayton a few seasons ago. Maruah brings impressive length and the potential to grow alongside Devin Booker. Shortly after making this pick, the Suns traded for another center, Mark Williams from the Hornets, adding depth upfront and raising expectations for Maruah’s development next season.

Noah Esenju to the Chicago Bulls

The Bulls were among the most active teams last season. Esenju is considered the best transition player in the 2025 draft class. It’s easy to envision the young French forward racing down the court for fast breaks and finishes with assists from Josh Giddey. While the pace of play can shift quickly in the NBA, the Bulls appear committed to matching the tempo of the Pacers, which aligns perfectly with Esenju’s strengths.

Carter Bryant to San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are in need of both shooting and defensive skills, and Bryant offers both. The freshman from Arizona fits the mold of an athletic forward, known for his significant blocking and stealing abilities this season. He’s also a solid spot-up shooter, making 37%. Although he may lack some creative playmaking skills, that’s less of a concern for a Spurs team that includes Victor Wembanyama, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox, allowing Bryant to focus on finishing plays with Wemby’s rim protection backing him up.

Walter Clayton Jr. to Utah Jazz

The Jazz have several young players with potential, but none quite match Clayton’s unique skill set. The senior from Florida is a prolific pull-up shooter who seems ready to score as soon as he steps on the court. He had an impressive performance during March Madness, contributing significantly to the Gators’ run for the national title. His skills appear to be a good fit for the NBA, similar to how Danny and Austin Ainge saw potential in Payton Pritchard with the Boston Celtics. Clayton could thrive in a comparable role in Utah.

Jace Richardson to Orlando Magic

I had Richardson ranked high on my draft board, and the Magic snagged him at the 25th pick, which is precisely what they needed. The Michigan freshman displayed exceptional shooting ability this past season, particularly from three-point range. Last year, Orlando struggled with three-point shooting, and adding Richardson alongside Desmond Bain in the backcourt enhances their chances. With a solid defensive foundation already in place, Richardson’s fit seems quite promising.
