60% of Americans say Biden lacks mental ability to hold office, poll finds

Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they are no longer confident that President Biden has the mental capacity to effectively serve as president, according to a poll released Monday.

The poll, conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, found that a growing number of Americans do not view Biden as competent.

According to the Associated Press, about 60% of those surveyed doubt the president’s mental competency, including about a third of Democrats who said they had little or no confidence. , 80% of independents say they have no confidence in the president’s mental abilities.

Heading into Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, just 38% of American adults approve of the way he is handling his job as president, while 61% disapprove. There is also widespread dissatisfaction with Mr. Biden, 81, over his handling of a range of issues including the economy, immigration and foreign policy.

Roughly four in 10 Americans support Biden’s handling of climate change, abortion and the war in Ukraine. But his performance is far worse on immigration, the Gaza war, and the economy, with only 3 in 10 Americans supporting him.

But the news wasn’t all positive for former President Trump. Nearly six in 10 Americans also said he lacked the mental capacity to serve as president. Nevertheless, the 77-year-old received wide support from voters on the issue.

The Associated Press poll surveyed 1,102 U.S. adults using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel. The survey was conducted from February 22nd to 26th, with a published margin of error of 4.1%.

The results of the Associated Press poll mirror those of the latest Fox News polling data released Sunday.

Biden’s worst ratings came on border security, with 71% saying his administration has largely failed to improve conditions at the border, and 24% saying it has mostly succeeded.

Next, 69% feel Biden almost failed. Just as many say the same about unifying the country, including improving the country’s security (63%), running the economy (61%), and improving America’s image around the world (63%). 61%) also expressed a similar opinion. Additionally, 58% say he has largely failed to help working-class Americans.

“If the president declares that the union status quo is strong, Americans will largely disapprove,” said Daron Shaw, a Republican pollster who conducts research for Fox News with Democrat Chris Anderson. “The main reason for this disagreement is economics.” “Despite the vociferous and somewhat condescending protests of some economists, most people now have less money than they had a year ago to pay their bills and buy food, clothing, and gasoline.
